Description
Neuschwanstein, translated as New Swan on the Rock, with its soaring fairy tale towers, is not an authentic medieval castle but was constructed between 1869 and 1882 by Ludwig II of Bavaria.
Ludwig was sometimes referred to as Mad Ludwig or the Fairy Tale King. Neuschwanstein was
only one of several extravagant castles built by Ludwig using his own funds and extensive
borrowing. He was ultimately declared insane and died in 1886 at the age of 39.
