Description
Mono is a large saline desert lake located in the valley just to the east of the Sierra Nevada. Due to the brine shrimp which thrive in its waters it attracts and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds. Early in the 20th century the water rights to the Mono feeder streams were acquired by the Los Angeles Water Dept and diverted to LA via a newly constructed aqueduct and the lake allowed to dry up. Through a series of law suits throughout the 20th a century compromise has been reached allowing it to gradually recover.
