Description
Skellig Michael, the most dramatic example of the ascetic religious life of early Christian Ireland, lies about 8 miles off the coast of Kerry. The rocky pyramid rises abruptly from the sea to a height of 714 feet. A monastic site on a terraced shelf 600 feet above sea level was occupied from the 6th through 12th century. An open stairway leads to the site containing six beehive cells and several stone crosses and slabs denoting ancient graves.
